“We must obey God rather than men. "Acts 5:29

Overcoming Sin

Often times when Theresa was a little girl she would use the bathroom in her parents’ bedroom instead of the bathroom in the hallway. One day she noticed some adult magazines sitting on the back of the toilet. She was overwhelmed with curiosity and she began to read the magazines that opened the door to the enemy for sexual sin. Soon after Theresa started reading these adult magazines, she became addicted to masturbation and pornography. Her viewpoint of a relationship between a man and woman became altered as she seen the same gender performing sexual acts together. The combination of these things resulted in Theresa acting in sin of some things she seen in the magazine. Theresa lived her teenage life full of rejection and a poor self-image. One day at school, someone invited her to church. She attended church service the following Sunday. During service she felt the Holy Spirit convicting her heart about her lifestyle. She wanted to change, but knew she needed help. She decided to try God’s way because she was depressed for so long. The Pastor did an altar call and immediately Theresa went to the altar. She recited the prayer of salvation and became saved.

How was your environment as a child? Were you exposed to pornography at an early age? Sex is all around us, the media uses it for advertisement just to sell simple products like soda. If parents are into pornography, they should not leave it in an open place that could expose an innocent child to it. Have you ever heard the saying, “Whatever you do in the dark will be exposed in the light”? This saying comes from Luke 12:3: Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

Theresa’s parent’s secret sin became exposed to their child. Theresa’s parent’s sin blinded them to fact that they were destroying their daughter’s innocence and altered her from developing a healthy sexual perspective. Sin can open up the doorway to many things. Sin blinded Theresa’s parents with selfishness. Sin allowed the enemy to get a foot hold on Theresa as she became addicted to pornography. Sin caused Theresa to explore acts of homosexuality. John 8:34 says, Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.” The enemy wants to keep you a captive to your sin and keep you spiritually dead. You will lack the will power to overcome it.

We are naturally sinful by nature. Galatians 5:19-21 says,” The wrong things the sinful self does are clear: being sexually unfaithful, not being pure, taking part in sexual sins, worshiping gods, doing witchcraft, hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, feeling envy, being drunk, having wild and wasteful parties, and doing other things like these. I warn you now as I warned you before: Those who do these things will not inherit God’s kingdom.” These sins will not get you into heaven.

Do you believe that sin equals death? A life of eternity into Hades; James 1:15 says, “Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” Still don’t believe me? Romans 6:23, says “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” There is hope to conquer sin and live a lifestyle of righteousness when we submit our lives to Jesus. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Do you need help today to overcome sexual sin in your life? The first step in healing is to confess our sins to God. 1 John 8-10 says, If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Let’s pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, I come boldly before your throne to ask you to cleanse me of all unrighteousness. I confess __________(name your sins). Your word says in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that, “My grace is sufficient for you, for your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. “Romans 5:20 says where sin abounded, grace abounded much more. Father, I thank you that you are a gracious God. Romans 8:1, there is no condemnation in those that belong to Christ Jesus. I declare that I am a child of the Most High God! Lord I plead the Blood of Jesus on my mind and I rebuke the devourer in Jesus name. Isaiah 54:17 says, no weapon formed against me shall prosper. 1 John 4:4 says, “Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world”! Psalms 51:10 says Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Lord I pray that I can produce the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5 which is love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control so I can give up old selfish feelings and evil things I want to do. Lord let me dress me in the full armor of God in Ephesians 6 so I can stand against the wiles of the devil. Let me put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, shoes of gospel of peace, shield of faith to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one, helmet of salvation, and the sword which is the word of God. Father I thank you for the victory for conquering my sins. I walk in faith and believe that I am healed. Thank you Lord, that you answered my prayers today. In Jesus name Amen.
